Main Events
Last week finally saw official coverage being confirmed in Rwanda. Pictures directly sent by someone from Kigali show a black pickup carrying a gen 4 Trekker, which is a common setup used in some African countries such as Kenya, Nigeria or Senegal.
Google and the Rwandan government announced last year a partnership which includes the addition of the country to Google Street View but it was unknown if an official gen 4 camera was going to be used. Now it is sure the country will get high quality coverage.
A Google Street View was spotted in Israel. Since no announcement was made by Google this was a complete surprise. Last time Israel had an update was in 2015, with only a partial update. It is the first time a gen 4 camera is spotted in this country.
The first August 2022 imagery is already available as it was published 9 days after the beginning of the month. The countries with data from the current month are: Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, UK, USA. First July 2022 coverage was also introduced in New Zealand and Turkey. June 2022 imagery was also added to Sri Lanka which is quite surprising considering the recent events in the country.
A Google car was seen driving in Melilla, one of the Spanish enclaves in north Africa. Current coverage in the city is quite poor, maybe this time the whole area will be imaged.
An update happened to the list of future coverage last week. Malta saw all its entries being updated for July and August 2022 but the entries were not made public. Croatia was also added back for two months and this was confirmed by Croatian spotting cars driving in the country at the beginning of August.
Continuous Updates
Last week updates were found in 24 countries.
Turkey got numerous updates in the north and the northwest, including a lot of new rural roads.
After Monument Valley, another iconic road of the western US got updated: Nevada state route 375 also called the Extraterrestrial Highway. Both roads were stuck in gen 1 coverage from 2008 but now have gen 4 coverage.
A new highway recently built in Romania and opened on 28th of July is already available on Street View since the 11th of August. With only two weeks it may be the fastest road to get its first coverage after built completion.
